3 standing nudes
Normally I would not display unresolved pieces. Here something different. In the first two I did the drawing first in line. In the third, I worked tonal patches very loosely, putting the mid dark and mid light on first. Using turps as a medium ONLY. But when I got home I exaggerated the "lost" edges, leaving the "found" in focus on the centre! of the figure, a la Max Meldrum and Pat Moran. This left basic problems with the drawing which could be solved by "box skeleton" drawing to start( Shoulder girdle, pelvis etc)

BANANA
Its been years since I did a still life! This is a "portrait" of the first bunch of bananas from my own trees. And sweet they were. Hanging in the breezeway out of possums reach, they looked spectacular in the night light. Three days it took. Trying to work the focus (lost and found edges)so that what is near is in sharper focus. Its not easy. The tetrachrome palette was augmented by Lemon yellow(Hansa) only. 5 colours! I was not doing anything other than enjoying myself, so the execution is somewhat bravura. I like the awareness of the brushstroke at a close viewing distance, yet at a couple of steps back they "disappear" and become.....bananas.This conundrum is where the magic happens, and is why I admire Singer Sargent.

HARE
Experimenting with the tetrachrome palette I did this little study in about 40 minutes. The imprimatura, drawing with the brush in orange, shadows blocked, light blocked, then extreme darks and lights. Very direct.I like it.

MILLICENT FALLS (study)
I heard the phrase "contextualise" the other day, and it seemed too mean "paint a background" amongst other things. Working small is doubly problematicized ( Like that one?) by my Parkinsons. I like this little study. Simple yet vivid.

BROCADE AND CANE
The model has extraordinary milk complexion. The textures set it off, with fur, brocade, cane, timber, textured wall, and tapestry cushions. Not my usual stuff. Its NOT realism.I call it "collections of random incidents" Once you understand the structure you make it up,like the brocade at her feet. This has become important to me lately

MOUNT BELLEDEN KER
Very limited palette based on thalo (winsor)blue, burnt sienna, cadmium and lemon yellow, ochre, black and white. Theres a touch of kings blue in the mountains. Theres palette knife work in the field. Hokusai's Wave is an archetype that may have been part of my vision.

SWAMP
Swamp is an imaginary place. Between the abstract expressionist "mark making" and the primal aesthetic of mimetics, its where the magic is. It has taken several months to complete

CLARE OUTDOORS
A second study of Clare. Used a neutral grey priming in acrylic. Good for opaque alla prima, but would require a LOT of adjustment to my palette in my transparent style.I suppose I would have to allow the grey primer to act instead of my usual practise of mixing in the neutral gray

Freshwater Cairns
Red ochre of some kind ,burnt umber, burnt sienna, venetian, english or persian or red oxide is almost mandatory to relieve the relentless green. Brown pink(yes its a colour.Art Spectrum make one) is used here. It is suprisingly often appropriate. There is also a glaze of green (red and green neutralize ) at the base of the tree.

Barron gorge
Barron gorge.Using alkyd medium tends to transparency. It does dry fast(overnight) and could be very handy when travelling.

TACKLE
Second large tetrachrome. This time the emphasis was greens and purples in a light tone. The little fighting animals really stand out in the clearing their wrestling has created.
