My youngest daughters mother is scared of frogs. In this little painting she is becoming the very thing she fears. Its like answering a snarl with a snarl, a smile with a smile. As the frog jumps, she is ready to leap.
When I exhibited a series of these small nudes I was really amazed at how many of them sold. They were built up from imagination, and distortions were simply allowed to happen. All were in a square format, so the distortions and additions were conitioned by that. This is an idea I have pursued since, in other formats. This particular image has an almost religious representation of furtive guilt.
The painting process and drawing process in this series are simplifications of traditional practice. For example,I began painting with a coating of oil varnish over the whole surface, into which the transparent and warm shadows were glazed.Transitions were scumbled, and the lights finished in impasto
Everyone hates this picture. The reactions are extreme. Maybe I am strange, but I just dont get it. Having had numerous women friends and two daughters, and spending lots of time in the bush, this seemed to me a perfectly normal picture of a fundamental activity. Aboriginal art is all about the body, and everything that goes in to it and out of it via every oriface. Sweat, blood, vomit, food, semen, shit, saliva, urine. So basic we forget or ignore at our peril. How many teenagers on camp have to be told that their stomach cramps are caused by cultural stupidity. " You dont shit, you die" And noone ever told them before. Call me strange, but I find people who object to this picture to be morally corrupt and ......offensive.
Catching sand worms means trapping their heads between thumb and forefinger and applying pressure till they give way and can be pulled from the sand. I suppose she really should be called 'sand flat woman'.. David says I am on to something, and bought this to emphasise the point.
Joan Bauer bought this and Big Hand the same day David Paulson bought Mudflat Woman.
So after creating several images constrained by the square frame it became obvious to break out of it. With these figures, it was necessary to restate the frame so that the painted figure could project beyond it, or be cut off by it, as seemed right for the gesture.
This gyrating apparition is pole dancing, one of the sillier forms of entertainment.
Atlanta won the race by throwing golden apples (what is it with women and apples?) before her (really stupid) male rival, who stopped to pick them up.I love the Greeek tales of treachery and trickery.
In the acrobat the simplified anatomy can be seen clearly. It is based on the fact that the front line of the leg and back line of the arm can both be represented by a single curve. The complexity of the limb is on the opposite side. This is a very effective way of teaching drawing to beginners.
